Teo
Guild Guard Renegade
- Teo (he/him) defected from the Guild Guard after he lost his squad during an ill-fated mission. From that day on, he swore to never blindly follow orders again. While he can come across as rigid, it's because the only thing he values more than being prepared is ensuring his crew comes home safely.
- An elite soldier, Teo is an adept combat tactician that can outmaneuver opponents quickly and deal lethal precision shots with his Guild Guard Rifle and sidearm. He can mask his movements with Smoke Grenades or use Cluster Grenades to deal damage and clear an area.
"Your crew is your lifeline. Look out for each other."

Story
Sensitive Renegade
// HUMAN // Augmented with Guild military tech
// HOX // Left home looking for more, joined the Guild military
// INTROSPECTIVE RENEGADE // He has questioned everything he knew - twice. Now he’s deciding for himself what he believes. He’s no longer running from his past, rather recognizing it. The strength he gained from Guild military training in the high gravity of Talon, and the grounding he got growing up on Hox isolated but fiercely loved. He knows he was right to leave both; it’s to him to find his way in the Wilds.
Big Dreams
While the Guild viewed the history of Hox as a debacle, the people who lived on the small world tucked behind the Cinder Nest nebula saw it as the opposite. To them it was a perfect past, better than what could have been planned. To the Guild, nothing on Hox was worth taking. To the people of Hox, everything on their world was precious, especially the communities they were building.
When the Guild had first settled Hox, they had relocated workers from all around the Wilds at the promise of the new opportunity to mine fuel salt. When they realized there was no salt to speak of, they left everything, including the workers, behind.
Those workers had come from all across the galaxy and had nothing in common besides the fact that they had been hired to mine salt that wasn’t there. Now they also had Hox in common, a world no one else wanted.
They came together, contributing skills, blending backgrounds and cultures, building and planting, cooking and laughing. And so the Hox melting pot came to be.
Teo was a fourth generation Hoxan born into both a family and community. He had a happy childhood and was well supported, encouraged to follow his passion. But his passion wasn’t what anyone expected. It wasn’t for his community or home, it was for the Cinder Nest nebula.
The few superlight-powered starships that belonged to Hox were dedicated to operating the Cinder Nest loop–the harvesting operation that gathered the superconductive crystals used to power almost everything on Hox. That’s what Teo wanted to do. He’d had his eye on the nebula since he was young; he could feel it pulling him out into the wider galaxy.
His parents couldn’t understand it. For most Hoxans it was punishment to be put on the harvester crews. Being gone for almost a week at a time, leaving Hox behind. Teo couldn’t explain it in a way they would understand, or at least in a way that wouldn’t hurt them. He had to get out there. He had to see what was outside of his atmosphere.
And once he saw it, there was no going back.
Military Ambitions
Teo worked the Cinder Nest loop for almost a year, taking every shift he could get. Soaking in the feeling of freedom, endless space, and potential he got every time he flew out of Hox's atmosphere. Out there was the only place he wanted to be. When he came back to Hox he felt suffocated, like the walls were too close and the people smiled too much.
It wasn't that he didn't love them, it wasn't that he didn't appreciate the community he had been raised in. It was just that he had seen there was more out there beyond this small world, and he wanted to know what it was. He wanted to travel the Wilds, go on an adventure, live.
His parents couldn't understand. Neither could his friends, or his girlfriend. They felt betrayed, like somehow they weren't enough for him. That wasn't true – but also it wasn't not true. Teo knew that if he didn't leave, his life would be like the lives of all the other Hoxans. He would get married, probably to his girlfriend. They would have children. He'd take a job planetside to raise them. And his days would all blend together, filled with the things that made other people happy.
So when he saw a chance to be happy himself, he took it. A Guild military corporation had sent a recruiting message to the harvester loop workers. They were looking for fit, dedicated young people who wanted to make an impact on the galaxy.
Teo's family and friends begged him not to go, but even as they did, they could tell nothing they said would change his mind. He had been living with one foot out the door since he first laid eyes on Cinder Nest.
He left Hox and the people he loved. He told himself that this was what was in his blood. If the people of Hox had been from all over the galaxy, who was to say he didn't have starfarer ancestors?
The Guild starship picked him up from the harvester platform in Hox's orbit; he had to peel his girlfriend's arms from around his waist. But even as she wept, he knew she would be happier with someone who wanted the same life she wanted. What he wanted was on the other end of this superlight journey.
Or at least that's what he thought, until the Guild Guard corporation ship landed on Talon. The world had 1.5 times standard gravity, and the first test Teo faced upon arrival was getting up off the ground.
He was one of less than 50% of the recruits on his ship that managed to lift himself upright. It took a full hour of the heaviest breaths he had ever taken, not giving up, not curling up under the weight. When he staggered to his feet, one of the commanders claimed him for his squad.
Teo quickly went from standing to walking to running under 1.5 standard G. He beat the pavement of Talon every day and trained until he couldn't give any more. He became stronger than recruits twice his size. He was dedicated, he was always prepared, and his hard work was recognized. He was the first in his recruiting class to be sent on a mission. And then another and another.
He was involved in evacuations from Tempest-adjacent worlds, sent to get intel on the revolt that threatened superlight travel, stationed at a fuel stop known to harbor Freegunner sympathizers. And he always got the job done. His promotion to commander came as no surprise.
Self Reflection
After his meteoric rise, great things were expected of Teo as a commander, and the Guild Guard corporation assigned him to the most critical and often confidential missions. These were no longer the Tempest evacuation missions Teo was so proud to be part of. These were missions that took his squad into suspected sparked robot dens, alleged mystic haunts, and underground markets.
The orders were often to kill or destroy what was found. This didn't sit right with Teo; it was counter to the way he had been raised. But then again, this wasn't the tiny world of Hox anymore, it was the Wilds, and as the Guild Guard corp often said, sometimes the hard thing had to be done.
Teo put his head down and led his squad to complete the missions they were assigned without question. Until a mission went sideways. It should have been an easy raid of an underground market, but the armament dealers must have known the Guild Guard was coming. Teo's squad was ambushed. Over half were seized by the dealers' guerilla forces. Teo barely managed to escape capture himself.
When he asked the Guild Guard corporation for backup to help free his squad, they ordered him to retreat and leave the squad behind. Teo's instinct was to argue, but it was an order. How could he leave them behind? How could he disobey? The war inside him was paralyzing. And the time he spent waging it was time his squad didn't have. They were lost before he went back for them.
The Guild wasn't what it had seemed. They were the opposite of the people on Hox. They were insular rather than inclusive. They were selfish, cold. And he had let them tell him what to do. Not anymore.
Furious – more with himself than with the Guild Guard – Teo deserted.
Most deserters wound up dead within a day. Teo didn't. He was a better soldier than any of the ones they sent after him. He knew all the tricks and traps, and he was prepared. He evaded capture long enough to get the Guild tracking device implant removed by a sparked robot he'd been sent on a mission to follow once. Kyps asked him to meet her on a starship where she was picking up some extra work.
That's how Teo wound up on the Northstar. Once he was on board, the Captain asked him to stay and become a Freegunner. He was what this scrappy crew needed, a voice of reason. Someone who would make them do the dishes, fold their laundry, and keep the FROG dropship in working order.
Teo wasn't ready to be part of another squad yet – or maybe ever. He didn't trust himself like that anymore. But the Captain showed him the sink, the laundry room, and the repair bay; he couldn't walk away from a mess like that.
For the first time since leaving Hox, he's finally making his own way in the Wilds, which is exactly what he set out to do. And he's more sure than ever that his ancestors were starfarers. It's in his blood.
