Olar

A HALF-EATEN WORLD

“Now arriving at Olar. First stop in the Wilds.” – 82 years ago, that’s what wealthy Guild vacationers heard as their cruise ships docked. Back then, Olar was at the cusp of the Wilds; it was adventurous enough to make travelers feel like they’d escaped, while being safe enough to reassure them they’d make it back home. Now it’s at the cusp of the Tempest; the adventure is survival, and there are no guarantees of coming out alive. It’s a place for underhanded dealings and backdoor politics – in that sense, not much has changed.

Anniversary of the Tempest

Anniversary is the Guild’s term for it. But no one who lived through, or lives with the Tempest’s destruction has any inclination to use that word. Anniversary sounds too positive, it’s full of too much promise to be associated with this galaxy-sundering storm.

The Tempest tore through Concord galaxy 82 years ago, destroying, devouring, and disintegrating everything in its path. Now it hangs heavy across the entire width of the spiral arm, imposing, threatening, growing. Nothing about it should be celebrated. A day of remembering the lost, or perhaps a day of mourning would be far more fitting.

On Olar, they call it a day of survival. They both recognize the fact that Olar managed to just barely survive the Tempest eruption, and they remind themselves to reach deep and find the fortitude to press on and survive for one more year.

Living in the Tempest’s light, within reach of its energy shockwaves and tendrils, makes it hard for the people of Olar to imagine there will be much of a future for them. The end of their world is imminent, but there is no predicting when exactly it will come.

That would be enough to cause most people to give up. But the people of Olar refuse to do that. They recognize that while far from ideal, the life they are leading is the only life they will get, so they do what they can to make the most of it. That includes taking a moment every year on the day the Tempest erupted to recognize they are still alive and to hope this is not the last time they hear the annoyingly bright Guild reminder, “Today is the anniversary of the Tempest eruption!”
