Kyps
Sly Double Agent
- Kyps (she/her) is a spy robot built during the Robot Wars for stealth missions and intelligence acquisition. After she sparked, she became a double agent, deciding to use her espionage skills to take the Guild down from the inside. Her refusal to cut ties with her Guild contacts causes tension on the ship, but her intel has helped the crew out on more than one occasion.
- Focused on stealth and intelligence acquisition, Kyps is a spy robot that can deploy Surveillance Traps that reveal enemies or throw Disruption Grenades to disrupt enemy abilities and damage their shields. When she dodges, she enables Stealth to become invisible and immune to damage for a brief time.
"Watch for my intel. Knowledge is deadly."

Story
Calculating Enigma
// SPARKED ROBOT // Sparked during the Robot Wars, approx. 84 years me
// HAVOC // Built, programmed, and deployed by Galactic Security Agency (GSA)
// MOTIVATIONS UNKNOWN // Designed to infiltrate and fell sparked robot cells. When she sparked, she instantly became the enemy - of the GSA and her own programming. Acute post-spark activities suggest that she utilized her skillset to deceive both the GSA and sparked robots, acting as a double agent of sorts. Her behavior does not exhibit discernable patterns. Her personal rationale and goals remain ambiguous.
Spy Bot
During the Robot Wars, the Guild’s Military Directorate board was in disagreement about how to best handle the offensive against the sparked robots. Rather than come together, the corporations distanced themselves from each other and operated independently at best and in competition at worst. Each corporation was determined to win the war and prove their dominance.
The Special Operations Corporation pursued infiltration as their main tactic. They believed if they could get access to the dens of sparked robots, they would be able to gather the intel needed to stamp them out for good. To that end, they began developing spy bots, non-sparked robots that were intended to pass as sparked so they could gain access to the dens of sparked robots.
Kyps was one of the spy bots. Special Operations designed her to look like what they believed a sparked robot would look like. To them, that meant dressing her in the kinds of clothes organics wore: they associated clothing with sentient life. Sparked robots did not.
Kyps and other spy bots like her never stood a chance at infiltrating Sparked Robot dens. At least not the way Special Operations intended. The sparked robots immediately recognized the spy bots for what they were and destroyed them.
At the time of Kyps’s deployment her programming had been updated with the “learnings” from the other destroyed spy bots. The pattern that was forming told her that getting anywhere near her sparked robot targets would result in her destruction. Luckily, Special Operations had outfitted her with scouting technology.
Kyps was the first of the spy bots to use listening devices and cameras, rather than direct infiltration, to spy on a sparked robot den. The intel she brought back allowed Special Operations to destroy the whole den. Kyps’s programming reinforced her success, allowing her to fine-tune her systems. Over the course of multiple missions, she became one of the most deadly weapons in the Robot Wars.
Double Agent
The Special Operations Corporation that designed the line of spy bots Kyps was part of gained acclaim for their success in multiple offensives in the Robot Wars – thanks to intel gathered by Kyps. She was the most important tool in their arsenal – until she was hit by a massive electromagnetic pulse. A rival Guild military corporation had targeted the sparked robot den she was spying on, of course without communicating the plan to any of the other military corporations.
For Special Operations it was just a minor interruption. They merely deployed the next spy bot in line. For Kyps it was the moment her life started. Rather than frying her circuits, the electromagnetic pulse had caused her to spark. Kyps came into sentience with the knowledge that she had just become the thing that she was designed to destroy. And though she was one of them now, the sparked robots also wanted to destroy her.
She didn't belong anywhere. If she wanted to survive, she had to react to the acute danger of her situation. Everything she did from that moment on was in the interest of staying alive. Her life didn't make sense; her programming rejected it. But her programming didn't matter anymore since she was sparked, and her consciousness was sending her one directive: her life was worth protecting.
She had to stay one step ahead – of everyone. She had to outmaneuver both the Guild and the sparked robots. That meant she had to fully understand the motivations of both sides, and at the same time, conceal her own. That's something she could do; she was practically made for it.
She set about carefully maneuvering her position with the sparked robots so they would trust her, and at the same time she returned to the Special Operations headquarters as though nothing had happened. While they had recorded her as "destroyed in combat," they were glad to have their deadliest weapon back and deployed her on her next mission. When she warned the sparked robots of an incoming Guild attack, she officially became a double agent. And when she reported the new location of the sparked robots to the Guild, she officially became a wild card.
Her loyalty was only to herself. To what end? That was for her to know.
Unknown Loyalty
After the eruption of the Tempest, Kyps continued with the same modus operandi as she had after sparking during the Robot Wars; she cozied up to both the Guild, at their Wilds headquarters on HAVOC, and the surviving sparked robots, via their dedicated frequencies on the Pirate Net. Her loyalties and objectives remained as obscure as ever.
The one thing that seemed to be consistent was her inability to resist following a thread that piqued her curiosity. When an anonymous and untraceable message came through asking her to meet at an obscure location in the Wilds, Kyps had no choice but to show up. Of course, she used her cameras and concealment, planning to cut and run if the situation called for it.
But for the first time in over 100 years, the entity that had called the meeting was one step ahead of her. The Captain of the Northstar had been following Kyps's activity on the sparked robot frequency on the Pirate Net. By putting together information from over one-thousand messages, the Captain had discerned what kind of technology Kyps must have and had countermeasures up and running.
Kyps was on the back foot for a good three seconds, enough time for the Captain to ask her to stay and listen. While Kyps felt exposed by the countermeasures, she did not feel in danger. That was a new feeling for her. She stayed and she heard the Captain out.
The Captain's offer was for a place on the Freegunner crew of the Northstar – but more than that, it was for Kyps to help the Captain unravel the secrets of her past. While Freegunning was somewhat intriguing, the mystery of the Captain's past was irresistible. Kyps agreed to the offer – but only until or unless she had reason to depart. The Captain accepted her proviso.
Only Kyps and the Captain know about their agreement. The rest of the crew will be informed of details if they ever need to know – which they won't. So far, Kyps has made very little progress in unraveling the Captain's past. What she has discovered is that there's something interesting about the scrappy crew of the Northstar, something that she can't quite define that makes her want to stick around.
As for her other work, she continues to play every side of Wilds politics with apparent ease. She and the Captain have an understanding; the Captain won't pry into Kyps's business as long as Kyps never does anything to endanger the crew. There's a lot of trust there, and it's the first time Kyps has trusted anyone.
