Story
Pulse Sculptor
// HUMAN MUSTIC // Can feel and influence the pulse of life in nearby beings
// CREEK // Was forced to leave at a young age for his own safety
// THOUGHTFUL PHILOSOPHER // His connection with the pulse of life came early. The people who should have protected him instead used his powers for gain. This sent him spiraling into deep depression, self-doubt, and anger. He was tempted to give in, but in defiance fought his way out. He left home to save himself; that means being vulnerable and open to new connections, regardless the risk.
Connected
Creek is a monotone and monotonous world. But those who are born there don’t know anything different. Jabali was raised in Creek’s nomadic travelling culture with a mind endlessly searching for variations. Against the backdrop of a dull world, he found that the people were the most fascinating aspect. And even as a young child, he began to study them in his way.
Both individual and group behaviours captivated him. He noticed how a single person could change the mood and energies of an entire group merely through their presence. He watched the way people migrated from one nomadic group to another, seamlessly blending with the people in their new group even as its make-up consistently shifted. The nomadic groups of Creek never stayed the same for long as people joined and departed at regular intervals. To Jabali this drove home how important both the individual and the group were.
Tuned to the energies of the people who came and went, he found that he was more drawn to certain people than to others. Of all the people he encountered, there was a musician and singer who interested him the most. She stayed with the group he was travelling with for only a short time each time she passed through. That seemed to be her way, flitting around, like the notes of her songs.
When she was gone, Jabali missed the music, so he taught himself to carry a tune and practised on the instruments his group carried with them. Music enchanted him. Songs carried him away. And the people around him seemed to get joy out of listening to him play.
When he was old enough to start drifting from group to group, he found himself moving as frequently as the singer had, in part because he was hoping to cross paths with her again. Inside him warred both the feeling that he should stay put in case she came, and the desire to move as quickly as he could from group to group in search of her.
When he finally found her again, it was with a group that had set up camp near a small lake. Nomadic groups only paused their travels for two things: birth and death. The singer was dying.
Exploited
At the thought of the singer dying, Jabali's heart broke. He couldn't imagine the world without her in it. He couldn't imagine his life without her song. He sat vigil at her bedside for days, silently begging her not to die, willing to do anything to keep her alive – including giving part of his own life to sustain hers.
On the fourth day of his vigil, she recovered. No one had thought it was possible, but sometimes illnesses took a turn like that. The singer privately told Jabali it had been he who had saved her. She felt his presence helped bring her back from the cusp of death. That seemed impossible; Jabali wrote it off as part of the euphoria she felt after a near-death experience.
The nomadic group packed up and started traveling again. Jabali drifted with them, and when the singer drifted into another group, he followed her. When a small child in their new group took ill, she encouraged him to sit with the child. Jabali did, for her. And the child recovered.
It happened twice more before he believed her. Somehow he was able to heal people. Something in him could tune into the pulse of life in others and he could lift it, feed it, and make it stronger. He wanted to help as many people as he could.
The singer told him this was something he shouldn't just do. He should trade it – for the things he needed, the things they needed. People would pay any price for what he could do. Jabali didn't feel comfortable with that arrangement, but the singer was determined. She actively sought out people in need and collected valuables from them before bringing them to Jabali.
The people she brought to him were all so grateful. They said they would trade twice as much for the kind of help he could give. The singer started asking for twice as much. Jabali worked and she sang.
As word spread across the nomadic groups of the young man who could heal, more and more people traveled from across the continents to see him. More than he could help. He started going without sleep. He pushed himself to give everything he could. He strained to save their lives. And then his own life began to falter.
He became weak, sickly, and tired. He could feel his pulse of life drifting away. When he told the singer, she was angry. How could he betray her? But it was Jabali who felt betrayed. And then angry. And then vengeful. She had used him. She had run him dry. She had amassed more valuables than he had ever seen. And what did he have? A worn body. A broken heart.
He turned on her in his anger and realized he was not just capable of augmenting a life pulse, he was able to take that energy, too. Taking her lifeforce felt replenishing – it lifted him. He could have taken it all. But at the last moment he stopped himself. He left her with enough life to survive, and he turned around and walked away.
Centered
There was nowhere on Creek Jabali could go where people didn't recognize him as the young man who could heal. They flocked to him. They begged for his help. All of them. All of the time. And then his parents came to find him. For a moment he was hopeful that they were there to help him. But they looked at him with desperation; when they heard of his powers and the valuables people paid for him to use them, they had been overcome with greed. They wanted to claim what they said belonged to them.
He had to leave. He no longer trusted himself. He wasn't sure that he could control himself. His ability to take the pulse of life from others terrified him. It was power he didn't want. He could feel it turning him into a person he didn't want to be.
In the dark of night, he stole away to one of Creek's few loading docks and boarded a manure transport bound for Three Rings. From there, he began his journey across the Wilds. At first he didn't stay in one place for long. He was used to being on the move. He traveled as the nomadic groups of Creek had, moving from one world to the next, falling in with those he encountered for a time and then moving on – before they discovered what powers he possessed; before he was tempted to use them. He still did not trust himself or anyone he met. He wasn't sure he ever would again.
But slowly he began to come back to the things that centered him – his curiosity, his analyzing mind. He began to study the people around him, to learn more about what made each group different from the next. He watched each culture with genuine interest, wanting to understand why people were the way they were. Part of him wanted to know if anyone was different than the people who had hurt him.
The more he let his curiosity lead, the more his powers settled back into something he could control, and the more he felt comfortable staying with people for longer than a few days. Still, he was unsure if he could ever allow another person to know what he could do. It would be a very lonely life if so, and that wasn't the kind of life he wanted.
He found himself searching the Pirate Net for others like him, for others who had gone through something like what he was going through. He needed help to find his way. That's when he connected with the Captain of the Northstar, who was assembling a Freegunner crew and promising a ship where anyone from any background would be safe and respected. If he was going to take a risk, the Northstar seemed like the right place to take it. He reached out to her and never looked back.
