UI Role Warden.pngWarden | High Complexity

  • Haymar (she/her) has been hunted by the Guild for years as an unlicensed mystic. A life on the run has made her slow to trust and quick to react. She hasn't made many friends. When it comes to preventing people from getting close, even her raging fire powers pale in comparison to her biting wit.
  • A powerful Fire Mystic and force to be reckoned with. Haymar can imbue her Flameshot Bow with explosive rounds to deal incredible damage. She can also unleash a devastating Wall of Fire to block pathways or use her Blinding Flash to hinder her enemies.

"Fair warning, lots of pent-up rage about to boil over."

Story

GG S0 Haymar Tooltip C.png

Powerful Loner

// HUMAN MYSTIC // Capable of channeling elemental fire

// THREE RINGS // Arrived at 18 months; orphan; birth world unknown

// LOW-KEY FIREBRAND // Raised in a Guild Youth Home, her records indicate frequent punishment for scaling the fences around starship loading docks. It’s unclear when her mystic powers developed, but when exposed, the Guild came for her. They lock away the things they fear, and she could have lit the entire world on fire. But she didn’t. She only scorched an escape route to the stars.

Orphaned

GG S0 Haymar Entry 01 C.png

Born in Avlin City only three months before the Tempest consumed the world of Detour, Haymar was found alone in a small apartment, screaming at the top of her lungs. She was evacuated along with the very few other Detour survivors. Being such a young child, she was put in an orphanage on Three Rings run by one of the Guild agricultural corporations; the corp planned to put her to work in their orchard stacks as soon as she was old enough. Haymar wanted nothing to do with harvesting fruit. Her heart was set on the starships.

Her behavioural records at the orphanage show that she was punished at least three times every week for sneaking away to the docks to watch starships blast off their launchpads and burn through the atmosphere. It didn’t matter how many sets of chores they made her do, Haymar wasn’t deterred. She was resolved to be on one of those starships someday.

The older she got, the more risks she took, and the closer she got to the ships. One night when she was fourteen, she snuck through the darkness into a ship shed where a grounded ship was being repaired. She was instantly drawn to the superlight engines. They were massive. And though this starship had been grounded all day, the engines were still radiating heat. It mad her feel alive.

One of the engines was damaged, and the ball bearings for the enormous engine fans had spilled out on the floor. Without a second thought, she picked up as many as she could and took them back to her room. Every night she slept with them under her pillow and dreamed she could feel the engine heat. And then one night, she woke up in a sweat.

Her whole body felt like it was on fire. The sheets were scorched. The ball bearing was red-hot. She couldn’t understand–what was happening? And then she realised: the fire was coming from inside her.

Escaped

The first time she felt afire, all Haymar knew was that it wasn't normal – and she would definitely get in trouble if anyone found out. The good news was that she never talked to anyone and no one expected to see her much; they all knew she was a loner and didn't bother her. So hiding it from the other orphans wasn't too hard. The biggest problem was that she was starting to feel mesmerized by the fire she could make. She found herself wanting to connect more deeply with the heat – as often as she could.

She spent less time at the starship docks and more time hidden away in a small janitorial closet where she could be alone and out of sight. It was there that she began experimenting with what she soon would learn were her mystic powers. The fire came naturally to her, and the burning and melting of things was more than satisfying. The more she practiced, the more she could control it and the more powerful she could make her flames. This secret power was the only thing that had ever made her feel alive. But it didn't remain a secret for long.

One day three kids who were on toilet cleaning duty for shirking the fruit-pitting shift barged into the janitorial closet looking for plungers – and instead found a fire mystic hovering in the air, holding a raw, lapping flame in her bare hands. They screamed, a shrill scream that Haymar will never forget, because it marked the end of the first chapter of her life.

Once the headmistress saw Haymar it was over. The Guild Guard corporation was called immediately and they stormed into the orphanage to hunt down and eliminate the "dangerous fire mystic."

Haymar had no choice but to burn her way out. She could have lit the whole world of Three Rings on fire, but that wasn't the way she treated fire – or worlds. She burned just enough of a path to get to the starship loading docks and snuck onto one of the vegetable cargo starships. She didn't care where it was going, she just had to get away.

As the engines roared to life, tears welled in Haymar's eyes. She was finally doing the thing she had always dreamed of doing: she was flying away into the stars.

Hunted

It was no surprise that the cargo ship she hitched a ride on was bound for Silo. Nearly every cargo ship in the Wilds delivers its goods to Silo – or stocks up with repackaged goods from Silo ready for distribution to the rest of the Guild worlds. Silo was a big enough world that Haymar could get lost in the crowd. It was also a big enough world that it was full of people who could discover her secret, and chances were it would be a Guild Guard. The place was swarming with them.

Haymar knew she couldn't stay for long – mystics were one of the things the Guild hated most, them and sparked robots – but she didn't know where to go or what to do. She lived on the streets, always on the move, staying mostly up in the workers' levels where there weren't quite as many Guild eyes. She ate scraps from Joggle Burger stands and slept behind stacks of shipping crates. She was working up a plan to find a starship headed to whatever world was furthest away from Silo when an old woman stepped up beside her.

For those who are not mystics, it is hard to understand what it's like to channel the energies of an elemental force. But for those who are, it is such an acute and unique experience that they can recognize the signs of it in other mystics. Duchess recognized the look in Haymar's eyes, and when she saw the singes on the young woman's coat sleeves, she knew with certainty that Haymar was a mystic who needed help.

Haymar hadn't spoken to another person in months, and she was instantly on guard, ready to burn if she had to – but then she saw Duchess make a small metal block out of nothing. She realized this woman was a mystic, too. While she didn't relax, she did listen to what Duchess had to say.

Duchess told Haymar of a small mystic community hidden on the far side of Hox. It was a place Haymar would be safe – for now, that was better than Silo. Haymar boarded the next transport to Hox and managed to make it there without lighting anything up.

That only lasted until she met Hamish Orthan, the Hox weaponsmith who specialized in making weapons that mystics could use to channel their powers. He told her to let loose – he had to see what she could do with her fire if he was going to figure out how to channel it.

It felt so good to burn with abandon. It was clear to Hamish that Haymar was one of the most powerful mystics in the galaxy. Hamish made her a crossbow that used the ball bearings she had stolen from the ship-shed back on Three Rings as projectiles. It was natural for her to channel her heat into them as they were so significant to her, and the weapon felt like an extension of herself.

Hamish suggested Haymar join a Freegunner crew. He could tell she wasn't made to hide out on Hox. She had defiance in her and Freegunners could use a mystic like her. There were crews that could be trusted with her secret – he gave her the contact for the Northstar crew.

Haymar didn't trust anyone, no matter what Hamish said, but the chance to spend her days on a starship was something she couldn't pass up. She expected her time on the Northstar would be short lived, that she'd have to move on like she always did, that she wouldn't fit in – but then she met a giant yellow robot.

Additional Info & Tips

Known Facts

  • On and off the battlefield. Haymar likes to remain in control. She's working through some trust issues.
  • Her ability to hover lets her get into strategically advantageous positions and rain fire from the sky.
  • A desire for revenge fuels her anger. Junk food fuels the rest.
  • In a pinch, she can blind enemies and make her escape-or use her crossbow to finish what she started.
  • Her Wall of Fire is both offensive and defensive, allowing her to take out opponents or cut off their approach.
  • As much as she dislikes people, she loves shoes - and she really, really, really loves shoes.

Tips & Tricks

  • Try to use cover while charging a shot, then peek out to fire it at a group of opponents.
  • Even partially charged shots can still pack a punch. The damage and explosion radius start to increase as soon as you start charging.
  • Wall of Fire will form in the direction the projectile was thrown, so play your angles strategically. You can even bounce the projectile off of walls.
  • You can get the most height out of the Hover ability if you're standing still when you activate it.
