UI Role Anchor.png Anchor | High Complexity

Curious Cleaning Robot

  • 1-0FF (he/him) is a sparked robot, a prototype battlefield cleanup unit originally designed (and later abandoned) by the Guild. Insatiably curious and devoted to cleanliness, the big yellow robot has found a new purpose-and a new family-as a Freegunner on the Northstar crew.
  • A former recycling robot with a spark for life and a heart of gold, 1-0ff can vacuum up incoming projectiles to mitigate damage or reverse the flow to pressure-blast enemies. He can also set out deployable Air Barriers to block projectiles or toss out a Trash Bomb that explodes on impact.

"Clean up on aisle 9... Lennox told me to say that."

Story

Tender Giant

// SPARKED ROBOT // Less than 2 years sparked

// HUSK // 243 years sorting trash on the incineration platform above the gas giant

// HIGHLY INQUISITIVE // Endless curious about the beings he meets. He wants to know their stories. His original programming had him asking: “What is this?” of every piece of trash that came through Husk. Since sparking, he continues to ask that question, but now he asks it, not of trash, rather of the most valuable things he finds – potential friends.

Trash Sorting

The Guild’s Core Board of Directors never aligned on much – except for the fact that every corporate director should look out for the best interests of their corporation. It turned out that technological advancement was in the best interest for the majority of corporations. That meant a lot of coin got pumped into the Core Worlds tech sector.

Tech designs trended toward the robotic as corporations competed to find the most efficient solutions they could easily commercialise and monetise. One of the biggest client bases for robotic designs was the military sector. Military corporations invested heavily in robotic solutions that allowed them to outpace or outperform competing military corporations.

Inspired by their investments, the tech sector responded directly to military sector needs. During a surge of expansion-effort-related battles, military corporations mentioned the desire for battlefield cleanup solutions.

1-OFF was originally designed as a prototype battlefield cleanup bot that could be deployed to vacuum up battle debris and leave behind a sparkling fresh landscape for Guild commercial or residential development. His functionality was impressive, but by the time he was ready to deploy, most military corporations had shifted their battlefield cleanup approach. It was easier, and cheaper, to bury littered battlefields under mounds of dirt shipped from excavation sites on worlds with active mining operations.

In a last-ditch effort to make coin off their design, the tech corporation that built 1-OFF sold him to a small trash-collection business looking to expand their operations to waste sorting on the platform above Husk. 1-OFF’s robust frame, originally meant to stand up to any lingering battle projectiles, was effective at withstanding the harsh platform environment. And his programming was easily modified to add a trash-analysis function that helped him identify valuable recyclables, suction them off the trash piles, and send them to be reused.

He was stationed on Husk for 243 years.

A Spark

GG S0 1-OFF Entry 02 C.png

For sparked robots, it's hard to identify the exact moment of spark. Consciousness isn't binary. Some sparked robots anecdotally report a slow "waking up," while others tell a story of an instantaneous shocking jolt into life.

For 1-OFF, the spark was initiated 243 years into working on the trash platform above Husk when he received the directive to sort himself – for incineration. His first thought as he gained consciousness was that he could not honor that directive. He wasn't trash. He had evaluated hundreds of thousands of objects over centuries of sorting, and he could say with certainty that the useful attributes he possessed put him firmly in the "valuable – do not incinerate" category.

He refused to follow the directive, and from that moment on all the decisions he made were his own. That was both wonderful and terrifying. At first it was mostly terrifying. How was he supposed to decide what to do next? There was nothing telling him what to do, and there were myriad paths before him. It was overwhelming. Very quickly, he decided that being alive was a lot.

For some time, he stood there on the sorting platform aghast at the expanse of space around him, pondering what was out there. From his time as a platform sorter, he could access what were clues about the life beyond Husk; he had encountered a large percentage of the things that the beings out there threw away. Now that he was alive, these were not just data files; his memories of the items he'd sorted were windows into life.

Based on the items he'd encountered, life was very chaotic, random, and bright. He had so many questions. And no way to get answers… unless one of the beings came to the Husk platform. His data files told him that the next inspection wasn't for another two years. 1-OFF wasn't sure how long that was, but he was sure he didn't want to wait that long.

Just as he was coming to a secondary conclusion that he needed to find a way off the platform, a blast of fire-filled air hit him from above and a loud, angry drop ship landed on the platform right in front of him.

Beings! 1-OFF was thrilled. And then they came for him with poking sticks and guns.

First Friends

GG S0 1-OFF Entry 03 C.png

The Marauders were menaces that pillaged worlds across the galaxy. They were convinced the galaxy was ending thanks to the Tempest, and they thought the only way to survive was to collect all valuable items for themselves. The Monarchs had risked everything to stamp the Marauders out, but recently there had been sightings again.

The Husk platform was the perfect place for a greedy band of semi-clone Marauders to collect the kind of "valuable" junk they so desperately wanted to hoard – they never thought they'd find a full-sized battle-ready robot.

1-OFF didn't know anything about the Marauders or any of the other beings in the galaxy. He didn't know that there were better, kinder beings. The Marauders were the first lifeforms he encountered. Thanks to them, 1-OFF knew wretchedness before he knew joy; he knew dread before he knew hope.

And that's all he ever would have known had it not been for the gunslinging green Claxton who arrived in search of a salvageable fuel sieve for a very old and very unique Guild warship. Seeing the Marauders attacking 1-OFF, Lennox sprang into action, taking them out one by one.

1-OFF could instantly tell Lennox was a different kind of being. The hoots of joy and the boasts of bravado made 1-OFF feel safe. And with Lennox's encouragement, he joined the fight for his life, reversing his vacuum to blast the rest of the Marauders straight off the trash platform.

When Lennox took 1-OFF back to the Northstar, 1-OFF was instantly enamored with the Captain. She was a sparked robot who had been figuring out this thing called life for 82 years. He had a lot of questions for her. He had a lot of questions for Lennox, too.

Lennox and 1-OFF became fast friends. The Claxton took the big yellow robot under his wing and proudly taught him everything he knew. And the Captain added perspective to Lennox's lessons.

Additional Info & Tips

Known Facts

  • Although he's over 200 years old, 1-OFF spent most of that time alone. Now that he's found friends on the Northstar, he loves them fiercely.
  • 1-OFF is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield, especially at close range.
  • He can vacuum up enemy deployables, in-flight projectiles, and even Blue Buddy cargo packages. He can also reverse his vacuum to pressure-blast enemies.
  • Compacted trash can be thrown as Trash Bombs, taking out enemies with every bounce.
  • On defence, 1-OFF can strategically place an Air Barrier to protect his crewmates from incoming projectiles.
  • Vacuuming up enough debris supplies him with more Trash Bombs and Air Barriers.
  • He's practically hard-wired to love cleaning, but he's finding he also loves games, music, dancing, and Freegunning.

Tips & Tricks

  • 1-OFF is most vulnerable when reloading, so it's a great moment to throw down an Air Barrier for extra protection.
  • Be wary of flanks! 1-OFF is especially vulnerable to area-of-effect attacks.
  • Enemies can't shoot through your vacuum or your Air Barriers, but your allies can!
  • Battle is important to 1-OFF, but so is keeping the battlefield tidy. Especially of pesky enemy spores, surveillance traps, and other deployables.
  • Try to plan ahead! 1-OFF is not built for speed, so you may need a head start to reach time-sensitive objectives.
